Fall is finally here.... and other stuff.

Well, the weather has finally cooled off. It looks like we had the last heat blast last weekend. The weather for the next week says high around 80. Good riddance, this summer seemed brutal, not so hot all the time, but extremely humid. Personally, I love the fall. It's actually both Jen’s and my favorite season. That was among the reasons we got married in October. Our anniversary is October 7th to be exact. We’re coming up on 5 years. Amazing, it seems like only a few weeks have gone by.

I wonder if our mutual love for the fall season had something to do with the TaborTot being due in mid October.

I played tennis last night for the second time this year. Wow, it’s nothing like riding a bike. It is very frustrating to miss on seemingly simple shots, but it’ll come back. I plan to play consistently with my cousin Ryan a few times a week in the evenings.

Well, since Noah put up a blog entry on hosting with Crystaltech, I guess I should too. I couldn't believe this new account type that they have. It's called a developer account. They give you 100MB of disk space, 30 MB of SQL server, 5 email accounts and tons of other features for $2.95/month. I couldn't believe it. That is where this blog is being hosted. Bruce and I have been using crystaltech for Inter-op.net for over a year now, and we have been very happy with their service. If you decide to sign up, use taborweb.net as a referrer and I get some free hosting. Or, if you like Noah more, you can use his domain (whatever it is) as your referrer.

Unfortunately, it gets dark sooner. I hate that part about fall.

You should play Paintball instead.

I think either way crystaltech will end up with some more clients. Pretty soon, a search for crystaltech on google will return our blogs. they wont even have to advertise.

You must not have seen the "...and other stuff." Besides, I got tired of hitting refresh constantly waiting for your blog to show up, so I had to write something.

lol @ Chris's comment!

Thanks for the Crystaltech info. If I decide to put up a "real" web site, I'll check them out.

I love fall and spring because of this weather. Sadly it seemed like the past fall/spring cycle didn't last very long. Its like it went from 80 to 40 and vice versa with no stop in between.

I also miss North the most this time of year. =[

Hurricanes

Ok, the time has come for my first political rant on this blog.

I mentioned to Lang and Chris today that I feel kind of strange posting this right after the cheerful post of our nursery progress. But I guess this is the nature of Blogs, saying what you feel at the time. Besides, If I come out with this one in November, it'll seem quite irrelevant.

Now that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita are gone, I just want to vent some of my thoughts on how disgustingly political this thing became.

I'm tired of the finger pointing over the response to Katrina specifically. Democrats in the Senate along with Jesse Jackson, Hillary Clinton (is she running for senator of Louisiana now?), and others were very quick to start blaming the Bush administration and calling him a racist over the perceived slow response. The claim is that the government (specifically the Bush administration) responded slower than is normal in this situation because the majority of the population of New Orleans is poor, black people. This is absurd. And all this started while rescuers were still attempting to save people from their attics and recover bodies (while getting shot at).

I don’t see how the president can be blamed for the way things went down. I don't see it as the president or his administration's job to keep up with every storm that threatens our coast and make preparations for the people who may or may not be affected. This is a state/local government issue. They are in place for a reason; if this isn’t one of them, please let me know why they exist. Please keep in mind that the states are afforded many rights under the constitution, many people don’t know this. In most cases the federal government is forbidden to intervene on a state’s turf until given permission by the governor. (I think that's how it's worded in the Constitution, but I'll have to double check) Whether this permission was granted in a timely manner or not seems to be hotly debated now, there are tons of blogs and articles to this effect on the net.

There are numerous “Facts” being strewn across the internet on both sides, I don’t see it as productive to list them here as I don’t know enough to determine the truth from the rhetoric. I encourage you to check them out before formulating an opinion on whose fault this all was, if that's important to you. Personally, I blame the hurricane.

Shame on those who would use this catastrophe to gain political ground and put their own ambitions ahead of the safety and continued support for those suffering, those they claim to represent. While I lean conservative, I would say the same if there were a liberal in the White House. If you don't believe me on this, you can even ask me. Just one more point on this, does anyone remember the 1995 heat wave in Chicago that killed 525 people? That was on Clinton's watch. Where was the rhetoric and where were the senators calling for investigations then? There were none, it wasn’t his fault.

Now, for the most important issue of them all. You’re not going to believe this:
“What do we call the people who were forced from their homes by the storm?”
Are you kidding me?

Evacuees? Displaced Persons?
According to an article I read on msnbc, those words are considered too “clinical and not sufficiently dramatic to convey the dire situation that confronts many of Katrina’s survivors.”

Refugees?
Jesse Jackson says: “It is racist to call American citizens refugees.” I have more strong opinions on this topic, but I don’t care to dignify this line of thought with comment.

To me "refugee" means “a person who seeks refuge”, period.

Now, Bush made reference to this in his address: “The people we’re talking about are not refugees…..They are Americans, and they need the help love and compassion of our fellow citizens.”

I say fine, whatever, call them what you want. Let’s move on and make some progress here. If they decide that for some reason it’s a good idea to rebuild a city below sea level, there is not much I can do about it. We will all be paying for it out of our tax dollars regardless, so let’s see some progress. And for Pete’s sake, build the levees higher this time. Pointing fingers at this point is counterproductive.
Besides, it only took a year for many Americans' opinions and resolve against terrorism to dissolve. I guess this should be all a distant forgotten memory by Christmas.

Hmm, how to end on a positive note? Well, it's good news to hear that the death toll was significantly less than projections. And who knows, maybe all the public awareness of Katrina helped keep more people safe from Rita.

End of political rant.

I heard Donald Trump on the radio and he blamed the people in charge of the levees. He mentioned after Katrina passed that people were out in the streets dancing because it wasn't so bad, then the levees broke. He said its only building structure, more concrete and more steel isn't hard to do. Seems reasonable.

Katrina just showed how sad America actually is. All of the finger pointing between the political parties (Before the storm hit, Governor Bianco hired the former FEMA chief under Clinton to advise on the evacuations and state emergencies but noone ever talks about that. Mike Brown is a loser tho too.), All of the rioting and personal gain from not just regular people but the cops as well, The slowness of any response, etc. The world had a field day with it on their BBCrap news. Anywayz, one thing is certain: I'm not living south of here. =]

Thanks for writing this post, Cameron, because you saved me from having to write it. ;) You are right on the money, bro.

I, too, have been totally disgusted by the political maneuvering and finger-pointing that has gone on during this catastrophe…so much so now I say I am “Politically Unaffiliated” (can’t even use the word “Independent” because it has its own connotation).

I feel the same way about 9-11. People are still arguing whether it was Bush’s or Clinton’s fault. Um, hello? It was the fault of the 19 guys who flew the planes into the building. But really, I don’t care who is to blame, I just want to know what are we going to do to prevent it from happening again?

It’s the same thing with the hurricanes. What can we learn from this disaster to allow us to respond and recover more quickly next time? Like you said, people took Rita more seriously because of what happened to Katrina, so there were fewer casualties. I hope VDOT took some notes and comes up with a better plan for evacuating Hampton Roads. I don’t want to be stuck on I-64 for nine hours!

Anyway, let’s move on. After all, this is the weather we’re talking about, for Pete’s Sake!

Nursery

Well, the nursery is done! We spent a good amount of time this summer working on getting it all setup. I did the bead board and chair rail around the room and Jen did the painting. We picked red for our color, against the advice of all the self proclaimed psychology experts who insist that you are born with the knowledge that red provokes anger.

This is me measuring for the bead board for length and holes around all the outlets.

This is Jen rolling the primer.

Here it is, finished except for the furniture and decorations.

And this is the finished nursery. (Click for larger image)

I guess if we end up with an angry child, everyone will know why, I think it looks great and have never been disappointed with Jen’s judgment when it comes to picking colors for our house.

We also went to Babies R Us this weekend and picked out 2 outfits for when we bring him/her home. It's getting to be crunch time!

That seriously looks like something you'd see out of a magazine. Except I'd like to see a different flooring option.

And surely if your child is angry, you'll have no one to blame but your own outlashing self! Let's just hope he or she never throws a foosball ball or table at you.

Yeah, but I haven't done that in weeks. Is it because I have better self control? Or perhaps because we have been winning every game, hard to say really.

You kicked something across the floor last week, but that is slightly better I suppose. At least there was no target this time.

Foos-tastic

As many of you who read this may know, I work at a company called InnovaSystems. They basically were a landing pad for those who left Automark in the mass exodus of 2004-2005.

Langdon and I both went to different jobs for some time, but the gravitational pull was too great to be resisted. It's nice to see so many familiar faces every day, guys who I have worked with for almost 5 years now. We have a good time there, and don't get me wrong we get large amounts of work done too.

We have Steve, Athens, Noah, Chris, Myself and Langdon, I'm pretty sure that's the order of hire. (I'm not including the 1-week stint I had there in '04)

Anyway, recently we moved into a very nice facility, especially compared to the NH-95 building on the naval base. We have a sweet break room with a widescreen plasma TV, a playstation 2, and a media center PC. But most importantly, we have a foosball table.

Langdon and I are on a team, "The Foos Fighters." Generally he plays defense and I play offense. Chris J is teamed up Jason from our project. I don't know if it's official, but we call them "Pity the Foos."

We generally are pretty evenly matched, but we have noticed that recently we are going for 1-2 week stretches where one team dominates the other. This past 2 weeks it was Langdon and I.

Today, after a fairly drawn out match we were winning against "Pity the Foos" by 9-5, Lang wasn't doing much scoring, so he felt he had something to prove. He asked me, "Do you mind if I score the last point?" I of course didn't mind. So with his 2 bar (The second to last bar from the goal) he pushes the ball back against the wall, waits for it to roll into place, then smacks it right in from the backfield for the winning point. It may be the best pre-called shot I've seen to date.

If we follow the pattern, we have definitely used up all our luck so next week should be interesting.

First ever entry.

Well, I've done it. I went to blogger.com and setup an account. I chose them because they were under "Google Tools" and I didn't feel like researching the different options. I know, what self respecting so-called software developer would use a template blog system? Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about backups and what not.

The real question is: do I have enough interesting things to say that make it worth the effort to keep blogging? And perhaps more importantly, will anyone read it?

This initial post is definitely going to be filled with more questions than answers. Call it a blog teaser.

I'll probably use this more like a personal journal for recording my thoughts and significant life events. After all, Jen and I do have a child on the way in the very near future. The cleverly named "TaborTot" (Thanks to Cammy Huston for coining the name). As we do not know the sex yet, we opt for nicknames like "The Pumpkin" and "TaborTot" over just saying "it", or "the baby". Seems a little too impersonal.

Pictures of the TaborTot are sure to arise here in the upcoming months.

Anyone who knows me well will probably not be surprised to find a few political rantings to arise from time to time as well. Hopefully I won't anger any bleeding heart lib friends of mine (Are either of them libs?).

Alright, enough for the first entry. Here are the questions on the table:
1) Do I have anything interesting to say?
2) Will I ever login to write another entry? (Check back soon)
3) Will anyone read it?
4) Who will be the first commenter ever?
5) Are any of my friends liberals? (man, I hope not)

Any thoughts?

Question 5: Um. What's your idea of liberal?

Dana, the due date is October 21st, we don't have long now!

How, do I define a liberal....hmm. 1) You feel the government is ultimately responsible for your well being. 2) You feel like you are entitiled to other people's money if they make more than you. 3) You are so impressed with government workers at the dmv, social security office, and IRS that you want underpaid doctors too with government healthcare like Canada.

4) If you're a white middle/upper-class male, you have no first amendment rights. 5) You'd like it so that people who break the law can have guns, and people who abide by the law can't.
